Don’t worry, rap music is not inherently sinful.

December 5, 2009 at 2:52 pm (Links!, Music)

If it was, I don’t think Tupac would be on The Vatican’s CD.

Anyway. Yesterday I was listening to the rap Gerald gave me, and I realized that The Game referenced a 2pac song in a humorous way, and the fact that I realized this made me really happy.

I really need to further my Hip Hop education. After finals, of course….

Being too casual with professors: Writing professor edition

November 30, 2009 at 10:21 pm (College, Links!)

Both happened in class today.

1. After he stated that we were all a bit unamused and tired:
“Well, you should have dressed up like a clown.”

2. After we did an activity involving reading other people’s handwritten work:
Fisher: “Is anyone else’s handwriting as hard to read as mine?”
Me: “No, I think your handwriting is on a whole different level of messy.”
After the class laughs, Me: “Though I’m sure it just shows your genius.”

In my defense, he did start reading the poetry in a funny voice at one point.

Oh, while I’m here. Today I also had a whiteboard vs. chalkboard discussion with my Calc prof in the middle of class, in which he stated that he would eat chalk powder for money. And he handed us a worksheet with a legit drawing of a “series zoo”, with two large “cages” to separate the Divergent and Convergent series. It even has a cute little Tickets stand in the middle. How fantastically eccentric!

Also while I’m here: today I received two study books by Cal Newport, the blogger behind Study Hacks. He’s a post grad from MIT, and emphasizes efficiency in studying, rather than a “brute force” or “pseudo-working” approach (both common in college). As someone who pretends to like economics, I find this idea extremely attractive. Therefore, I really want to read this books in order to procrastinate. But I know that this defeats the purpose. So I’ll just continue with my Calc homework now.

“If I” by Demetri Martin

November 22, 2009 at 1:00 am (Links!, Random)

I just watched the whole 48 minutes of “If I” on Youtube. And I’ve got to say, the man is a genius. I mean, I’d realized this to a certain extent before, but now I know that he’s literally a genius. The first video is here.

What I find particularly amazing are the poems. The first is a poem written entirely out of words on a beer bottle. The second is a 224 word palindrome (having to do with a mailman?).

A surprisingly true youtube comment on one of the videos:

“Sounds like a confession. A long, nerdy, beautiful confession.”

Success!

October 21, 2009 at 2:48 pm (College, Links!, Music)

WZLY (Wellesley’s radio station) finally has a live stream over the interwebs!

http://wzly.net/

Click “listen”, yo.

I’m still interning, so I don’t have a show yet. The schedule is also on that page, so make sure you’re streaming while someone is playing something. =P

Actually, I intern on the Saturday, 10am – noon slot. And, I think I’m doing my hour show this weekend…(it’s part of finishing up the interning process). But, you know, if you don’t want to wake up to listen to me at 8am (Pacific Coast Time) on a Saturday, that’s totally understandable. Also, I’m recording it, so maybe I’ll post a mp3 of it to this blog? We’ll see.

Cute, yet violent? Count me in.

June 18, 2009 at 10:59 pm (College, Links!)

Dude, My Brute is so addicting.

But in that “ok I’ll spend 5 minutes a day” way. Not in the “omg, must devote my life” way. Which is good.

(Sometimes little escapes are more fun to share than the worries of the real world. …That sounds more emo than it should. But I am kind of worried about some of the health paperwork for Wellesley. I don’t think it’ll be a drastic problem, but I naturally worry more than I should.)

This article seems strangely connected to my life.

June 6, 2009 at 4:45 pm (College, Links!)

Saying No.

It feels like the last year has been one big “yes” to everything. Yes, I will take four AP classes! Yes, I will join the Santa Barbara City College Concert Band! Yes, I will work 12.5 hours a week! Yes, I will help at AWANA every Thursday! Yes, yes, yes.

And it was insanity.

It was…difficult. But this article is right in that…I don’t know how to say no to “achievement” and “productivity” and “ego”. I think that if anything ever fully described the academic side of my life in high school, this article does. And this doctrine of “yes”, of “overachieving” until you want to pull your eyes out from all the stress…is a really hard habit to break.

Especially since we are heading off to college. I don’t know about you, but I want to live. I want to fully experience my time at college. I want to join too many clubs. I want to possibly minor in Music on top of my English major. I want to be a DJ on WZLY (Wellesley has their own radio station, and I WANT TO BE A DJ SO BAD). I want to head into Boston every weekend. I want…too many things, I think.

I don’t want to say no. But apparently, I’m going to have to learn how to.

Is this really what sociologists do?

Talk about teenagers’ hugging habits? Debate the ethics of Disney?

Really?

Officially the coolest twelve year old ever:

December 5, 2008 at 11:58 pm (Links!, Random)

a blogger from Chicago. She runs the blog Style Rookie

Tavi,

Why is she so freaking awesome? Since I’m feeling very listy:

1. You know that cliche saying about being “true to yourself”? She’s basically the non-cliche personification of this. I think back five years, when I was twelve and in seventh grade, and I was not nearly as secure in my identity as she is now.

2. She’s articulate and honest. She has a very unique voice, and a mature writing style. Some of the vocab she uses is surprising for her age.

3. She has a sense of style. This, of course, can be inferred, considering that her blog is based on fashion. But still. And, this ties in with #1, because it takes a lot of confidence to wear some of the stuff she wears.

4. This rap is SO win and hilarious (and references Queen). I also love how right after she stops rapping, she goes back to being completely serious:

Untitled from Tavi G on Vimeo.

I basically wish she was my little sister.

(EDIT: Recently she posted a blog about how she doesn’t want people to write about her. Although I understand her reasoning, I really don’t think that my own personal raving is going to promote her any more. Especially since “style rookie” has been looked up almost 5 million times on Google.)

Michael Cera fandom strikes again.

August 21, 2008 at 8:58 pm (Links!, Music)

So, I definitely never gave that new Nick and Norah Infinite Playlist movie a second glace because:

1. It’s based off of a youth fiction book, which mostly suck.
2. This is mind, most movies are far worse than the books.

I was almost tempted to read the book, due to heavy music interest, but the story line didn’t grab me, and I decided I had better things to do with my time.

But: I just found out that Michael Cera is in the movie. And now I’m tempted to see it? I’ll probably decide not to, but the mere temptation makes me realize how pathetic I am. However, apparently the movie is going to have a reasonably good soundtrack. Opinions on this? Personally, track seven is the only one I know off hand, and I love it mucho.

Also, on a completely unrelated note, Fleet Foxes actually has a myspace?! GRR. Despite having serached them earlier, I could never find them because of they listed themselves as Fleet Foxxxxxes, which is obviously not what I searched. Whatever, at least I know now. This, of course, also brings up the issue that I should to go on, say, lastfm for music. As if I don’t already spend enough time on this subject!

More links!

January 31, 2008 at 7:27 pm (Links!)

Sorry that this isn’t a “real blog”. But it is hella interesting, at least to me, heh.

This is why I’m a vegetarian.

And.

What has the world come to?! An emo Andrew Jackson?!

The world we live in. It’s bizarre.
